The Belt System

Each belt below is broken up into two parts, a solid color belt and a belt with stripe. If you are testing for a solid color belt you must be proficient at all techniques learned from white belt to current belt rank. If you are testing for a stripe, you will be tested only on the new information learned at your current belt level. You will test for a new belt or stripe every 3 to 6 months. Testing eligibility is always at Master Acri's discretion. He takes into consideration how many classes you have attended, how often you attend class and how well you can remember and execute the required techniques.

White Belt

All students enter the school as a white belt. You will begin your marital arts training with basic blocks and strikes. You will learn:

  • 5 hand techniques to counter a punch

  • 5 kicking techniques to counter a punch

  • 5 self-defense techniques against a attack from the front

  • 3 open hand forms

Green Belt

You train intermediate striking techniques and start to work on basic spin kicks. You will add to basic hand and foot combination striking.

You will learn:

  • 5 new hand techniques to counter a punch

  • 5 new kicking techniques to counter a punch

  • 5 new self-defense techniques against an attack form the side

  • 2 new open hand forms

Red Belt

You will continue working on advanced striking combinations, advanced spin kicks and intermediate jump kicks.

You will learn:

  • 5 new hand techniques to counter a punch

  • 5 new kicking techniques to counter a kick

  • 5 new self-defense techniques to counter a knife attack

  • 2 new open hand forms

  • 1 weapon form (staff)

Orange Belt

You will learn several more basic blocks and strikes and begin basic combination strikes.

You will learn:

  • 5 new hand techniques to counter a punch

  • 5 new kicking techniques to counter a punch

  • 5 new self-defense techniques against an attack from behind

  • 1 new open hand form

Brown Belt

Brown belt - You will begin working on advanced striking combinations, intermediate spin kicks and begin basic jump kicks.

You will learn:

  • 5 new hand techniques to counter a punch

  • 5 new kicking techniques to counter a kick

  • 5 new self-defense techniques against an attack from behind

  • 2 new open hand forms

  • 1 weapon form (staff)

Blue Belt

You will continue working on advanced striking combinations, advanced spin kicks and advanced jump kicks.

You will learn:

  • 5 new hand techniques to counter a punch

  • 5 new kicking techniques to counter a punch

  • 5 new self-defense techniques

  • 1 new open hand form

  • You will also be refining all previous techniques learned to prepare for your black belt exam.

Black Belt

At this level you will continue to work on all of the above material. This is when your true martial arts training begins. You will train to perfect the techniques that you have previously learned. You will train to perfect karate technique application. You will break down each technique and study when to use it and why.

You will learn:

  • Advanced Weapons forms ( knife and sword)

  • Advanced open hand forms

  • Techniques used by masters and studio owners that is outside the standard TangSoo Do curriculum
